1. Vietnam War Marker
Inscription. After the defeat of french colonial forces at the hand of the Viet Mihn in 1954, Vietnam was divided into 2 nations: Communist North Vietnam and Non-Communist South Vietnam. The United States became involved in Vietnam because it believed if all of Vietnam fell under a communist government, communism would spread throughout southeast Asia. This belief was called the "domino theory". By 1961, U.S. military personnel were devising and assisting the South Vietnamese army. By 1965, under the United Nations banner the United States military was actively engaged in the fighting. In 1973, a cease fire was signed in Paris and the United States ended active military participation. The cease-fire ended in 1975 when North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam creating a Vietnam under communist rule.
