1. Persian Gulf War Marker
Inscription. On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded the tiny, oil-rich nation of Kuwait. The United States formed a coalition of 34 nations to liberate Kuwait, beginning Operation Desert Shield on August 7, 1990. The United States deployed 694,550 troops in the war Operation Desert Storm, comprised of coordinated air and ground assaults, began on February 24 1991. Declaring a cease-fire 100 hours after the ground campaign started, the US led coalition forces had achieved their objective of freeing Kuwait from Iraqi control.
