The Wood Frame Houses
— Chilo: Living and Working with the Ohio River —
Four one-story homes stood in a row. The houses consisted of five rooms. The outhouse foundations along the fenceline are all that remains of these houses.
Indoor Plumbing
In the 1940s, indoor plumbing was installed and the outhouses were
converted into storage sheds.
Government Housing
The lock and dam housing of this time all used the same floor plans. At
some sites these smaller houses are referred to as "worker houses” or
"dam workers' houses". The 10-member Cann Family lived in one of
these homes. Workers were charged $15/month for rent. Families were
required to pay for their coal to heat the homes.
While living on the reservation had advantages, some workers felt that they were always on the job. One worker complained that the lockmaster always knew where to find you if you were "too handy".
Stories
"Our grandmother lived up on the hill and we went up
there to stay with her, and we looked down here and
could see just a little bit of our chimney.
