Inscription. In 1896 the New Bremen volunteer fire department was formed. A vote was taken to construct a building, and this lot was purchased for the sum of $700. A barn that stood on this site was razed, and the new fire station was dedicated in August 1897. The fire bell, which struck at 9:00 each evening reminded generations of young people of the curfew hour, weighs 750 pounds and was cast by the Buckeye Bell Foundry of Cincinnati for $125. For over 80 years this building served the community as a fire station, mayor's office, town council chamber and jail.
