Rochester was discovered and named in the early 1860s by prospectors from Rochester, New York.

The area was relocated in 1912 when Joseph Nenzel discovered large bodies of silver ore which led to the great mining boom a year later.

Rochester produced about 9 million dollars in silver ores although gold, copper and lead were also taken.
