Faith Grown Real

I said that I believed–not hard to say
When all about me bloomed a summer day.
When life was all aglow with warmth and light,
Small wonder that my faith waxed gay and bright;
For all who could doubt a God who made the flowers
And filled each sunny day with happy hours?

But one day I awoke to find the snow
Had covered all my world. I didn't know
That life could be so cold or skies so grey.
The sun and God were hidden quite away
And faith was dead–nor any shallow prayer
I might have said could ever make it fair.

As surely as the flowers had bloomed
But yesterday, so was my fine faith doomed.
Barren and brown it lay, a lifeless thing–
Or so I thought–but I'd forgotten spring.
There came a day when winter's snows were past
And there I found my faith grown real at last.
