This place has been set apart for rest and reflection. When World War II ended, Marines returned to peacetime duty stations or civilian life. This peace, bought at great cost, shattered when North Korea invaded the south in 1950. To help meet the ensuing crisis, the President ordered activation of reserves, but a shortage of lieutenants remained. The Marine Corps ordered 540 enlisted Marines (regular and reserve) to Marine Corps Schools, Quantico, for officers screening. Of that number, 291 earned commissions as second lieutenants on 29 May 1951 and reported to The Basic School. This class of 291 new lieutenants, Mustangs all, comprised the 5th Special Basic Course.
The quality of officers commissioned through this program was proven. Seventy-two completed careers as Marines. Others returned to civilian life, making contributions as CEOs, educators, engineers, doctors, scientists, and entrepreneurs.
