1. Sir Peter D. Macdonald Marker
Inscription. Born in Sydney, Cape Breton 1894, Peter enlisted in Canadian Forces after war broke out in 1914. While serving in Europe, he was wounded in France and hospitalized for three months. When hostilities ended in 1918, he earned a law degree from Cambridge U, and soon after entered politics. On his second attempt, he became the MP for the Isle of Wight, and was reelected until his retirement in 1959. When World War II broke in 1939, he became a Flying Officer in the RAF and served during the critical "Battle of Britain". As the adjutant of the squadron led by air ace "Legless" Douglas Bader, his efforts contributed greatly in influencing Sir Winston Churchill to provide larger fighter plane formations in defense against the very powerful Nazi air force invaders. His lengthy service in government and in both World Wars earned him a Knighthood.

1. Family brings Cape Breton war hero home. Brendan MacDonald, of Sydney, was among those in attendance at the unveiling and said it was nice to gather as a family to honour his great-uncle. "He left (Cape Breton) in 1915 and he died in 1961 and he only came back to Cape Breton once, he was only able to get home once, so it was kind of a neat feeling to sort of bring him back home, in a way, to his native land," he said.
