Inscription.
Built circa 1894 by Otto & Augusta Hischke, Prussian immigrants. The house has a shotgun floorplan of brick made in Frenchtown on a raised foundation of locally quarried and cut "Burlington" limestone.

The Victorian Vernacular has Steamboat Gothic details: the exposed front gable rafters are supported by carved purlins. The front and right (street-side) gables have exposed and carved rafter tails. The arched top window heads have hand carved vines and flowers above flat topped moldings on the double front windows. Flat sawn redwood balusters and polychrome paint are prominent features of the style.

The brickwork shows our local German design influences including cornices with stepped corners and dentils on the outside corners, segmented arched brick headers over the windows and doorways and also extensive brick sidewalks and patios. Sadly, the small brick smokehouse/laundry that was behind this home was raised as many in town have been.

The house fell into disrepair and in 2006 was condemned by the city as "unfit for human habitation." After a complete two year restoration that included a new addition on the back, the house was featured in Better Homes & Gardens and St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles magazines and won the city's Garden Beautification Award.
