Odd Fellow Building
The Odd Fellow organization erected this building for a meeting place in the 1890's. It was originally a two-story building. The second story contained the lodge meeting rooms for the Odd Fellows and their "sister" lodge, the Rebekah's. The First floor was originally occupied as a "singletary's store," where a young Mr. Rasplica learned his trade.
The top story was removed in later years, but the building served the people for generations as a gathering place for vaudeville shows, dances, plays (it had a stage) concerts, 8th grade graduations ceremonies, schoolhouse public meetings, Catholic chicken dinners and Kiwanis pancake breakfasts.
The building has been remodeled and is presently home of "Stepping Stones" Child Care.
Samuel Birger Store
"The Grand Leader"
Samuel Birger built his first store, a frame 18 Χ 32 feet and 18 feet high building, in 1893. His second store was a handsome two-story brick building that he operated as a fully stocked dry goods store on the first floor, with living quarters for himself and his family on the second story.
In 1950 Samuel's son, Bernard, generously donated 5 acres
of land to the newly formed District #7 as a site for an elementary school in Glen Carbon.Charles Wieduwilt Barber Shop, Circa 1900
Glen Carbon Mercantile Company
This beautiful Victorian structure existed as a "company" store at the time of the village's incorporation in 1892, when the brothers Louis and John Diebert bought the business and began the Glen Carbon Mercantile Company. The coal company continued to issue warrents to the miners to trade there on credit.
This building, located on the west side of Main and Collinsville streets, housed a successful restaurant called "The Candlelight Lounge" for several years. The building burned beyond repair in the 1970's.
