Inscription.
Main Street, 1880
Early maps show Glen Carbon's Main Street as a major trail - possibly even a portion of the Goshen Trail. Trails and roads meant horses and wagons. The earliest known business appearing on the trail following a course through the Judy Creek valley was a blacksmith shop. The blacksmith shop appears on an 1873 map. William Yanda, a blacksmith from Austria, had a blacksmith shop in the early as early as 1857. His son, Frank, was also a blacksmith and carried on the family trade. An 1880's tintype picture of the trail through Glen Carbon shows a blacksmith shop as well as a wheelwright shop. The wheelwright shop was the business of a Mr. Franek.

Village Hall 1910
The Madison Coal Corporation deeded a piece of ground to the village in November 1909 as a site for a new municipal building. The building would include a fire engine house, city hall, and city jail. The Oswald Brothers of Alhambra were the low bidder, and the building was completed by December 1910 for $6000.

Company Houses
Throughout the village rows of dwellings with identical or similar structures are likely to be "company house," having been built either by the St. Louis Press Brick Company or the Madison Coal Company. Continuing West on Main Street (across from the Illinois Bell Building) is a row of company houses built by the Madison Coal Corporation. Company row houses are to be found in several other areas of the village.
