Army. This We'll Defend. The U.S. Army was officially established on June 14, 1775 by the Second Continental Congress with George Washington appointed as its first distinguished commander. From its inception, the U.S. Army has played a vital role in the growth and development of the American nation. Drawing on both long standing militia traditions and professional standards, it won the new republic's independence and at times provided the lone symbol of nationhood around which patriots. rallied The US.
