As a respected member of the local community and the last surviving enslaved person of Essex County, Anthony Thompson's life journey took him from being someone's property to becoming a free man and property owner in West Orange. He was born into bondage in Somerset County in 1798. Thompson was granted his freedom in 1828 and lived across from this location in a small cottage from 1833 to his death in on September 16, 1884.Topics.
