1. Lance Building Marker
Inscription.  Philip L. Lance (1853-1926) was typical of the innovative spirit of the New South. Lance took a common Southern agricultural product, the peanut, ground it into peanut butter and used it as a filler between soda crackers. Lance's "peanut butter sandwich” soon became a favorite snack food for local residents. Lance eventually sold his numerous peanut products nationwide. The plant built on this site in 1926 had expanded significantly by the 1950s. The company moved its operations to a larger site in the early 1960s.
