Inscription. Charlotte's growth in the late 19th century led to an increasing need for new places of worship. Dr. Thomas Henderson Pritchard (1832-1896), a native Charlottean, president of Wake Forest University and a widely respected pastor of southern churches including Tryon Street Baptist (now First Baptist), established a mission Sunday School in 1895. In 1901, this mission became Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church and Dilworth residents built a church on this site in honor of Dr. Pritchard. The current structure is the third sanctuary on this site.
