We dedicate this memorial to the courage and valor of the members of our community who served this country by answering the call of freedom

The Hunter Brothers, Albert, Kenneth, John & Walter, on July 4,1930. The entire world suddenly knew the names of these "Spartans of the air" as the newspapers called them. The four brothers set an air to air endurance flight refueling record of 553 hours, 41 minutes, 30 second; a grand total of 23 Days of continuous flying.

"In The Heat of The Night"
This ground breaking film starring Sidney Poiter & Rod Steiger. Received 5 Academy Awards, including best picture in 1967. The movie was filmed primarily on location here in Sparta, Illinois
