Regarding Fire Station 27. Peter K. Schabarum designed the two-story brick building with its tiled roof and three apparatus bays. The station, including land and construction, cost around $178,000 and was dedicated on March 16, 1931. At 20,000 square feet, the building was the largest fire station west of the Mississippi River when it opened. For more than 60 years the old fire station served the Hollywood community, including the motion picture studios and the stars who lived in the Hollywood Hills. It was also used as a movie location by, among others, The Three Stooges and Buster Keaton. It was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
A brand new Fire Station 27 opened next door in 1992, and the L.A. Fire Department Museum opened here in 2001.
