North Fork in Southold in Suffolk County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Downs Carriage House
The shop has been nicknamed "The Hurricane Press Shop" in honor of the famous printing press which printed the local newspaper, the Traveler, the day after the 1938 hurricane. Operated with a foot pedal, the Hurricane Press was able to run although the electricity was out.
The shop is dedicated to the memory of Robert P. Long, who created it. Herb Shultz gave us the contents of his father's print shop to complete the Society's collection of printing materials.
