Inscription.  In May 1886, the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina authorized Rev. Edwin Osborne and Rev. Benjamin Bronson to establish a home for orphans at this site. In May 1887, the Thompson Orphanage was officially opened. At first some old school buildings were used to shelter both children and staff. Over the years, these buildings were replaced with dormitory-like cottage. By 1926, the orphanage had five children's cottages, an infirmary, superintendent's home and an administration building with classrooms, gymnasium, and library.
