Hamilton Bank and Trust Company
Circa 1913
This elaborate Beaux Arts bank building was constructed between 1912 and 1913, for the Hamilton Bank and Trust Company, where it served until the bank's merger with Hamilton National Bank in 1943. Since then, the building has had a number of tenants and owners, including several insurance agencies. The Hamilton Herald-News has conducted business from the building since 2015.
Established in 1876, the Hamilton Herald-News is the city's oldest business institution. Only 200 people lived in Hamilton when the paper began publication in the back end of a stone building on the south side of the square. The first paper was owned by Judge J.A. Eidson and Capt. W.T. Saxon, both Civil War veterans. The Herald-News absorbed a number of other newspapers, including the Hamilton Record, which was an outgrowth of the 19th century newspapers, Hamilton Rustler, The Courier, and The Journal.
