Inscription.

Charles Bulfinch, the foremost architect of his time, designed this house in 1805 for Stephen Higginson, Jr. Like No. 85, which Bulfinch built in 1800 for Harrison Gray Otis, it is not part of a continuous block. That more economical pattern was soon adopted as the demand for land on Beacon Hill increased.

Bulfinch used the design of No. 87 for four houses, now destroyed, that he built on Park Street in 1805.

All residences in this neighborhood are private. BH08
