Cash Point School. A Rosenwald School. The former Rosenwald School at Cash Point was built in 1923-24 for a cost of $2,300.00 as a two teacher frame school. The Rosenwald Fund was developed by Julius Rosenwald, CEO of Sears, Roebuck and Company, and educator, Booker T. Washington in response to the need for improved schools and education for African-American children in the South. The matching grants were established in the 1920's and when they were stopped in 1932 there were 5,357 school buildings in 15 southern states, including 435 in Louisiana. The matching grants required that the local African-American community raise a portion of the funds for the school, and the local school board provide teachers and manage the school. There were additional Rosenwald Schools in the area and over the years, as larger brick schools were built, the wooden Rosenwald schools were torn down or converted into homes, schools, churches, etc.
