Boston Theater District in Suffolk County, Massachusetts — The American Northeast (New England)
The Union
48 Boylston
Owned and operated by the Boston Young Men's Christian Union for more than 150 years, 48 Boylston Street was designed by Nathaniel Bradlee in 1876 and is the most accomplished building in the High Victorian Gothic idiom remaining in the central business district of Boston. Founded in 1851, the BYCMU provided a variety of social, intellectual, recreational and service programs to Boston's citizens at this location over the course of its history.
The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a local landmark by the City of Boston Landmarks Commission in 1977. Following its use by BYMCU, St. Francis House and the Planning Office for Urban Affairs of the Archdiocese of Boston converted the building to affordable housing to serve the needs of the community and to carry on the charitable mission and legacy of the Boston Young Men's Christian Union.
