Regarding Daniel W. Jenkins. The original occupants, Daniel Webster Jenkins and Hattie Jenkins, played a major role in advancing the business interests of the area and both were extensively involved in community service. D. W. Jenkins was a ticket agent for the railroad; ran a lumber, coal, and straw business; was the town of Schoharie supervisor; belonged to various civic organizations; was a charter member of the water district; and founded the D. W. Jenkins Hose Company in 1896. Hattie Jenkins was a major donor and was largely responsible for the construction of the Bethany Lutheran Church in 1906. As a member of the Central Bridge Eccentric Club, an organization of women, she was ahead of her time in researching and bringing to light relevant issues of her day.
