Uriah Matson Building
1858
Historic Brookville
Pioneer merchant Uriah Matson constructed this as a hotel, but it never saw this use, instead it housed a variety of businesses including the dry goods stores of Sol Kaufman and G. Loebman, L.A. Leathers' grocery, the Brookville Hardware Co., and from 1917 until the 1960s McCrory's Five and Ten. The unaltered Art Deco western storefront of Carrara glass was constructed in 1937 for Brown's Boot Shop. The third floor was remodeled in 1892 for use as a Masonic Hall and later contained the studio of long-time Brookville photographer Frederick A. Knapp. The building was seriously damaged by fire in November, 1990, but is being restored as historically accurate as possible by present owner, Paul Gray 1992.
