Inscription. On land near here was state's first military airfield, home to the West Virginia Flying Corps. Founded in April 1917 by Louis Bennett Jr. and backed by state and private funds, the corps was modeled after the French Lafayette Escadrille with the goal of becoming a unit in the US Army. Rejected by the army, the corps disbanded and Bennett joined the RAF, dying in France in 1918.
