Ketchum Street. . Named for Sidney (1797-1862) and George (1794-1853) Ketchum, the brothers who created Marshall. A land surveyor and developer, Sidney obtained the grants around Rice Creek to create and name Marshall. George, an engineer for the Ohio and Chesapeake Canal, brought the first group of settlers from Upstate New York to settle around Rice Creek in 1831. Sidney opened the country's first bank in 1836, built and donated Marshall's first Methodist church, built Marshall House Hotel in 1838, once the largest between Chicago and Detroit. George was Marhsall's first postmaster. In 1849 he moved to California where he built highways for the Gold Rush . This historical marker was erected by Rotary International.
