Frederick E. Knapp, Photographer
Historic Brookville
Frederick Knapp (1869-1948) documented the people, places and events around Brookville from 1898 to 1944. His enchanting studio portraits include prominent men and beautiful women, soldiers of two world wars, young boys and their first deer, young girls and their dance cards, children with their toys and babies on blankets. His passion also included documenting the structures, community events and other scenes that present a lasting legacy of daily life in Brookville at the beginning of the 20th century.
Pictured above are examples of Knapp's photographic preservation of Brookville's architecture, including the Matson Building (left [top center photo]) which housed one of his photography studios. His images of Brookville help to tell the story of the town and preserve our local history from the days of horse-drawn buggies and wooden sidewalks to electric streetlights and automobiles. Below are photographs that highlight his vast range of work, both in and out of his studio.
