In 1831, America's first underground anthracite mine opened on this very spot. A monument was placed at the site in 1901 when [illegible] celebrated its [50th?] anniversary [illegible] the West Side [illegible]. Relocation [illegible] the monument [illegible] the Columbia Hose Company.
