Inscription. In 1885, the name was changed to First National Bank with J.M. Henderson as president and Robert J. Fisher as cashier. (Fisher received national attention for inventing a typewriter that was able to print downward on a bound ledger.) After being destroyed by fire in January of 1889, a new building was constructed and occupied until 1922. At this time, a more modern building was erected on the corner of Washington and Jackson and became the home of First National Bank for many years. This Jackson Street location was sold to the City of Athens and became City Hall.

Erected by Main Street Athens Project.
