1. Life on the Square Marker
Inscription. Lawrenceville's Courthouse Square was a center of community activity for more than 150 years. For decades the square hosted special events, celebrations, and commemorations, and was a hubbub of enterprise as people from the surrounding area came to shop and conduct daily business.

Though the square is much quieter today, it is still a special, endearing place. As the scene of so many memories for residents of Lawrence County, the square remains the heart and soul of Lawrenceville.

Post Cards of Courthouse Square

Early 20th-century post cards proudly display scenes on the square. In the upper card, the court house is seen in a view along State Street. In the lower card, the white bank building in the distance (at the corner of 12th and State streets) today houses the Lawrence County Historical Society.

·In 1932 The Texas Company announced the debut of Texaco Fire Chief gasoline with a parade through the square. Lawrenceville and the Texaco Refinery were tightly bound; events at the refinery had huge significance to residents of the city and Lawrence County. Notice the Texaco filling station that stood on the corner of State and 11th streets.

·A state-of-the-art army tank helped sell World War I Victory Loan war bonds on the square in 1917.
