Inscription. Built in 1857 by Charles Henry Manship, the Manship House is an excellent example of a Gothic Revival “cottage villa" inspired by A.J. Downing's The Architecture of Country Houses. Manship (1812-1895) was the mayor of Jackson during the Civil War and made significant contributions to the development of early Jackson. He was also a skilled craftsman as he worked on the Governor's Mansion and the Old Capitol. Manship and his wife Adaline Daley Manship raised fifteen children in this house.
