Our Lady of Victory Chapel / Derham Hall
In 1923, Our Lady of Victory Chapel was built on the highest point of the College of St. Catherine campus. On the feast of Our Lady of Victory, October 7, 1924, it was dedicated by the Most Reverend Austin Dowling, Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
The design and style of the Chapel were inspired by the Romanesque Cathedral of St. Trophime in Arles, France. The building is constructed of Bedford travertine stone and inlaid brick, with walls and pillars of Batchelder ceramic tile.
Other features include a 116-foot bell tower, a tiled roof, an original Reuter pipe organ and a permanent altar of granite and Mankato stone. The attached cloister connects the Chapel to Derham Hall, the oldest campus building.
On May 1, 1958, the Chapel was consecrated by the Most Reverend William O. Brady, Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Twelve crosses along the wall indicate its status as a consecrated church.
Our Lady of Victory Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1902, Hugh Derham, a farmer from Rosemount, Minnesota, contributed $20,000 toward the construction of Derham Hall, the first building on the campus of the College of St. Catherine. At the same time, he gave an additional $5,000 toward student scholarships. Chartered in 1905, the College of St. Catherine is the firt Catholic liberal arts college for women in Minnesota. In 1904, the building was named in his honor and officially blessed by the Most Reverend John Ireland, Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
From the beginning Derham Hall has served as the College administration building. In its early years it also housed classrooms, the library, the Chapel and residence and dining facilities. Until 1962, Derham Hall High School, a day and boarding school for girls, occupied the second floor.
Derham Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places.
