Railroads. . The railroad was built in the early 1870's through Montgomery County. The first line crossed the county on a north/south route, it was the International and Great Northern (now Missouri Pacific). A short while later the Gulf Colorado RR took an east / west route through Montgomery County. New towns developed along both these right of ways. Other communities that were by-passed by the railroads dwindled while some became ghost towns. Sawmills, cotton gins, and small factories began appearing along the railroads. Farmers and loggers found that they could export more of their products on this faster and safer transportation route. This allowed for an increase in productivity.
