1. Wessington Springs Trivia Marker
Inscription. Springs that flow into the park along with an old legend about a trapper named Wessington is how Wessington Springs got its name. Legend has it that Wessington was burned by the Indians while tied to a tree in what is now the city park. Our First Settler was Levi Hain & his wife Maribee who originally had a sod house, but then changed to a log cabin. The only evidence is an indention in the ground west of the ball park concession stand. Our town was originally named Wessington in 1878, Elmer in 1882 and finally Wessington Springs in 1884. Did you know that Wessington Springs, South Dakota and Truth or Consequences, New Mexico are some of the longest postal addresses in the nation?
