1. Men of the Hill Marker
Inscription.  They called this place Noow Tlein, Novoarkhangel'sk, and Castle Hill. They were the men who worked, fought, and lived here.

Andrew P. Johnson
1898-1986 — Prominent member of the Kiks.ádi clan and a child of the Kaagwaantaan clan:
"And the only place that was called Shee Atiká is the Indian village. The Baranov Hill was an island. At the low tide there would be a sandbar between the round hill and the point. At high tide there would be water. We call that place Noow Tlein."

Kiril Timofeevich Khlebnikov
1784-1838 — Assistant chief manager of the Russian American colonies and manager at Novoarkhangel'sk between 1817 and 1832:
"The Novoarkhangel'sk fortress; consisting … of three towers and a battery of 30 cannons … and a two-storied building … which is used by the chief manager, is located on … a kekur. This formation consists of native rock, rising 77 feet above water, topped by a flat area … Below the manager's housing there are the barracks which accommodate 40 workers. Below this on the rocky slope there are warehouses, barracks and other quarters. … These

Fred Wildon Fickett
1857-1928 — U.S. Signal Corps Private stationed in Sitka from 1882-1884:
"Sitka appears to be quite a pleasant place and I think I shall like [it] here very much. My office is in the Old Russian Governor's palace. I have two large rooms and they are much better than any others in town."
