1. Culture and Entertainment Marker
Hanover's rich cultural history has included numerous bands, orchestras, drama organizations, and other musical groups. The Hanover Opera House no longer exists, but presented plays and concerts starting in 1887, eventually becoming a movie house. The Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, housed in a historic former school building, provides live performances today. Other long established groups including the Lyric Band of Hanover, the Hanover Symphonic Orchestra, the 180-voice Hanover Community Singers, and the Hanover Community Players, a theater group which produces several plays and musicals each year.
Hanover has the eighth largest pipe organ in the world with 231 stops and 14,341 pipes, the Austin organ at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
Forest Park, located south of Mt. Olivet Cemetery, was an amusement park from its beginnings as Eichelberger Park in 1904 until it closed in 1967. It offered a roller coaster, merry-go-round, roller skating rink, theater, thrill rides, band concerts, a picnic area, vaudeville acts, and dancing to live orchestras.
