1. Milton-Madison Bridge Marker (east side)

Inscription. Milton-Madison Bridge The first bridge across the Ohio River here, a 20-foot wide metal truss, officially opened to traffic in 1929. Drivers paid 45 cents and walkers 5 cents. In 2012-2013 a new 40-foot wide bridge was assembled on barges, lifted into place on temporary piers and slid onto the original, reinforced concrete piers. The bridge won awards for its unique construction.

Madison Breweries Madison was famous for its production of ale, beer and porter. In 1823, Jacob Salmon established the first brewery west of the Alleghenies. Among the many other breweries were the Greiner, later Madison Brewing Company, and the Union Brewery. "MADISON XXX ALE" was featured in saloons throughout the U.S.

Beginning in 2012, to keep the bridge closed for only ten days rather than an anticipated year-long closure, the new Milton-Madison Bridge was constructed on temporary piers adjacent to the circa 1929 span. Then the old cantilevered truss was slid 55-feet onto temporary piers via steel rails and plates while the new continuous truss was slid onto the permanent piers.
