1. Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church. Robert Childress’s first church after his graduation from Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, and served as the mother church for five others constructed by him. A former hard drinking and fighting man of little education, Childress returned to school at the age of 30 and received his ordination 11 years later. He moved to Buffalo Mountain, Carroll County, in 1926, where he led the construction of the Buffalo Mountain Church. He originally preached at the Buffalo Mission School, and the rock-faced church was built in 1929, three years after Childress arrived. Church is one of the six Childress rock-faced churches located in the Virginia counties of Floyd, Carroll, and Patrick, built between 1919 and the early 1950s by Presbyterian minister Robert W.
