Cors and Wegener Building
Ballard Avenue Landmark District
Through the 1890s this was the most imposing structure in Ballard. It was built in 1893 by William Cors and Robert Wegener, proprietors of the Ballard Wine House. These two men first became business associates in 1889 and opened the Wine House a year later in a wooden building at this location. In 1893 they constructed this impressive structure to house their thriving business. Cors and Wegener were once described as “artists in compound mixtures and fancy beverages.” They even provided a separate entrance and private room for women. The Ballard News, a local newspaper run by J. D. Ruffner & Sons, had office space in the building as early as 1904.
