Inscription. In 1891 William Curtiss built a modest structure on this site to house his tinware and stove manufacturing and sales business. By 1909 he had expanded his inventory to include a wide variety of hardware products and in 1911 he constructed the imposing building that stands today. Curtiss also dabbled in politics, serving as a city councilman for the City of Ballard in 1890 and 1892. Upon Curtiss's death in 1928, Nathan Anches took over the Curtiss Hardware and Paint Company and operated it until the mid-1930s. The upper stories of this building housed the Curtiss Apartments.
