538 Caliber Single Mount Dual Purpose Gun
Military Museum of North Florida
The 538 is considered the best intermediate caliber dual purpose gun of World War II. It was in service from 1934 throughout the 1990s. In the naval gun measurement system the size of the gun is expressed as the diameter of its bore and the length of the gun. In this case the diameter is 5 and the length is 5 x 38 or 190.
It can fire 12 to 15 rounds per minute and has a range of 10 miles. Its antiaircraft ceiling is 37,200 feet. It is separate loading meaning a projectile is loaded first then powder bag is loaded and the gun fired.
