1. Site of the Richmond County Mutual Insurance Company Marker
This photo shows the Center Street location of the Richmond County Mutual Insurance Company, which was founded as a fire insurance company in 1836. The office building (the small building seen at left in this photo) was constructed in 1876, and the company continued at this location until relocating to the north shore of Staten Island about 1906. The building was demolished sometime after 1926.
The company's name appeared in some 19th-century newspaper reports of fires on Staten Island. They were the insurer for nearby St. Andrew's Episcopal Church when the original church building was heavily damaged by fire in 1867. An 1867 newspaper account of the fire stated that the church was insured for $4,000, and the organ was insured for $500, but that would only partially cover the estimated $10,000 loss.
The large brick building seen in the background of this photo is the 1848 Richmond County Clerk's and Surrogate's Office, which is now the Historical Museum at Richmond Town.
