Belleville in St. Clair County, Illinois — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Ebeling - Maurer House
German immigrants Jacob and Barbara Sieg purchased this property in 1844 from Theodor Higard, who in 1837 began to develop what would become the Village of West Belleville. Their orphaned daughter, Maria moved away but returned after marrying Charles Ebeling, a coal miner from Germany, in 1875. She confirmed her ownership of the property in 1876, and together they took out a mortgage of $700 to build this house.
In 1887, the Ebelings sold the property to John and Amalia Mauer, who were children of German immigrants John was a furnace tender at the Adolphus Bush Glass Works on Bush Avenue (renamed South 20th Street), and Amalia was active in Christ Evangelical Church on North 14th Street. The Mauer family resided in this house until the last surviving daughter, Alvena died in 1983.
This building is an example of the German American Folk House favored by working - class immigrants from Germany. The Belleville Historical Society acquired the house in 2011 for a museum to interpret the history of the Village of west Belleville.
Erected 2018 by Belleville Historical Society.
