Inscription. Dr. James Robert Tiffany, Jr. (December 1944 - May 2009) came to the Loudoun Campus of Northern Virginia Community College in 1947 to develop the Health and Physical Education Department, which he headed up for the next 35 years. During that time, Dr. Tiffany changed the lives of countless students as he introduced them to a wide variety of lifetime sports. He was loved by students and staff for his smile, sportsmanship and sense of humor. Dr. Tiffany believed in educating the whole person: mentally, physically and spiritually. Among the many accomplishments Dr. Tiffany took pride in were the design of the Exer-Trail and Exer-Center, an outdoor fitness system; his book, The Exer-Trail Way to Total Fitness; and the conversion of the old cafeteria into a classroom and fitness center. Dr. Tiffany was an athlete in his own right and experienced success competing in many triathlons. Dr. Tiffany was a wonderful friend, teacher and a great ambassador for the community college system.
