Governor John Reynolds. John Reynolds, Illinois' fourth governor, was born in Pennsylvania in 1788 to Irish immigrants. His family moved from Pennsylvania to Tennessee to Kaskaskia, IL, and in 1807 to an area known as the Goshen Settlement near Edwardsville. Reynolds studied law at East Tennessee College in Knoxville (now UT) and set up his first law practice in Cahokia. He was a veteran of the War of 18 12 and the Black Hawk War (the latter for which he achieved the rank of major general of the Illinois militia). Reynolds' public service spanned 36 years across all three branches of Illinois government as one of the first Illinois Supreme Court associate judges, Illinois House member and speaker, and governor. He was a proponent of slavery. Reynolds resigned his gubernatorial role in 1834 to serve in the U.S. House. In 1837, Reynolds along with other investors built the first railroad in the Mississippi Valley from the Belleville area bluffs to the Mississippi River. Reynolds later lived in Belleville where he authored several books including his autobiography. He died in 1865. . This historical marker is in Edwardsville in Madison County Illinois
