Inscription.
The Raid on Ploesti, or Operation Tidal Wave, a raid on nine oil refineries by units of the United States Army Air Forces based in Libya and Southern Italy, occurred on the 1st of August 1943. The objective was to curtail petroleum production for the Axis forces. Elements of the Ninth Air Force's 98th and 376th Bombardment Groups and the Eighth Air Force's 44th, 93rd, and 389th Bombardment Groups participated in the mission. Of the 177 B-24 Liberators assigned to the mission 53 aircraft were lost. 55 damaged, 440 Airmen were killed and 220 were listed as missing or captured.

Known as D-Day or the Invasion of Normandy, the Invasion of France and the ultimate liberation of the European Continent from Nazi-German domination as part of the Allies Operation Overlord, began in the early morning hours of the 6th of June 1944. Members of the 82nd and 10lst Airborne Divisions landed by parachutes and gliders behind German lines along the Normandy coast. The 1st Infantry Division, 4th Infantry Division the 29th Infantry Division.along with British and Canadian Infantry and Armor Divisions, performed amphibious landings along the Normandy coast. The American forces landed numbered 73,000: 23,250 on Utah Beach, 34250 on Omaha Beach, and 15,500 airborne troops landed during the first day or D-Day.
