Inscription. These two brick structures were built for Kirkman & Son, a major American manufacturer of soap products during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Arthur G. Stone designed 43 Bridge Street, a glycerin factory with Neo-Classical details, in 1911. Four years later, S.A. Moore designed 37 Bridge Street, a seven-story storage structure. Kirkman & Sons was sold to Colgate-Palmolive-Peet in 1930 and the plant closed in 1945. The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Dumbo Historic District in 2007, which includes 43 and 37 Bridge Street. Converted to residential use in 2011, Kirkman Lofts received a Design Award of Excellence from the Society of American Registered Architects in 2012.
