Inscription. This brownstone was designed by Architect Alexander Wilson in the Italianate style. It was constructed in 1869 by James Meacher and Thomas Hanson and is typical of the post-Civil War row houses built in Harlem during the period from 1947 to 1963. Writer Langston Hughes, one of the foremost figures of the 1920s Harlem Renaissance cultural movement occupied the top floor of this house as a workroom, Hughes said that Harlem was the source of his literary inspiration, and he spent the last twenty years of his life in this building writing poetry, nonfiction, humor and musical compositions.
