Inscription. Inspired by the Musée Carnavalet, which presents the history of Paris, the museum was founded in 1923. Its purpose is to create a love for, and interest in, all things particular to New York City. Joseph H. Freedlander was selected as the architect after winning a limited competition. Construction began in 1929, and the four-story late Georgian-style building opened to the public in 1932.
